COMPREHENSION

DOCUMENT A

1. In this text, there are Zeke and Mister Stanley who are father and son. Then, ‘the disappeared mom’ of Zeke, and Lula, a close friend of the family. Finally, there are ‘Tony Soprano’, a character from a TV- series and Ismail Kadare, an Albanian author, really appreciated by Lula.

 

2. a) Lula comes from Albania, she reads novels of Ismail Kadare,an Albanian ‘her country’s greatest novelist’.

 

b) Now, she lives in the United States of America in New-Jersey where she is applying for a job. It is illustrated by ‘Lula’s job interview’.

3. a) Lula is not an English native speaker, she learned how to speak English, ‘it was how she learned English’. 

 

b) Zeke tends to hurt himself while doing sports. It is illustrated by ‘each time’ expressing an unfortunate habit.

 

c) In the text, we find several spatio-temporal frameworks such as ‘on Sunday afternoons’, ‘Sunday nights’. Hence, we can guess that it is the only day of the week where Zeke and his father spend time together.

 

d) Mister Stanley prefers to buy sports equipment instead of doing any sports. He is told to have “a boyish love for buying sports equipment”. We do not have any further information about his taste for sport practice.

DOCUMENT B

4. a) Charmain Joshua, the narrator went to the university where she ‘graduated’ and continued her studies at Cambridge university to obtain a master’s degree. She adds that she ‘hated Cambridge’.

 

b)  At the beginning of the text we discover that the narrator earned a ‘bursary’ for a university and she reveals to the readers that she grew up in a ‘slum’. 

 

c) Charmain Joshua has several sisters, the ones who told her stories about England. She explained that her ‘sisters’ read her stories when she was a child.

 

d) In Cambridge, the narrator shared a flat with four roommates who were ‘four other graduate students’.

 

5) Charmaine Joshua had to leave Hillbrow, her previous town, because she accepted a new job in Johannesburg.

 

6. a) The narrator first night in Johannesburg was hard and long to live because it was the first time she left the family home. 

 

b) The same year, Charmaine went to study at Cambridge university because she won a scholarship to study abroad.

 

7) England is supposed to be Charmaine’s dream destination. It was ‘magic’ for her to hear about this country. Using comparative, she asked to the reader ‘what greater fairy tale could there be than royalty?’

She watched a famous English wedding in a small TV ‘brought for the occasion’ adding that she ‘stood in a jam-packed prefab classroom’. She later said, ‘imagine the impact’ arguing that it was obvious for her to fall in love with England.

8. a) The narrator hated Cambridge because of the weather and the absence of her family. She felt ‘more depressed as the day became colder and wetter’ and that the connection of the phone line was awful ‘a few seconds before the line was disconnected’. 

 

b) Charmaine decided to move to Cambridge because another South African graduate student of her local university also wanted to go there. Besides, England was her dream destination since she was a child so it would be like an accomplishment.

 

9) In both texts, there is a different kind of relationship between fathers and children however both are loving.  On the one hand, in the document A, there is a relationship ‘on Sunday afternoons (...) father-son things’ that seems to occur only on Sundays. And on the other side, in document B, there is a deep attachment between Charmain and her father. When she left her home, her father ‘had tears in his eyes when he hugged goodbye’. 

 

EXPRESSION

SUJET 1

If you had to leave your country, what would you mostly miss and how would you adapt? (200 words)

 

If I had to leave my country I would mostly miss my plants. I am so deeply attached to my habits that I would be truly lost without them.

I am regular as clockwork. I wake up at 6 AM and I have breakfast. Tomatoes with eggs on a bed of lettuce. Not just any products, mine. I have a garden for 13 years now. Every day at a specific time I water my beloved plants. They mean the world to me. So, if I had to leave my country, the first thing that I would do is finding a brand-new land to have my own garden. 

I should take my books, learn about the new climate to be able to grow new plants.

I think I would find the perfect flower shop, get along with the florist and spend my days growing plants. 

I am afraid to lose everything I have built here and yet I am pretty excited to discover new territories.

It is my chance to create a new species of plant. Of course, I thought of everything, I would take my baby plant ‘Ostenora’ with me. She is exceptional, I could not leave without her. 

New land, here I come! I will become the most innovative biologist in the world! 216

SUJET 2 

To what extent is reading the key to having access to another culture? (150 words) 

Reading is one of the most important thing in the world. Through books, you can voyage, discover new horizons, new customs.

You can learn new languages that will help you becoming open-minded.

How is it possible that with a small object, full of ink, you can enter a new world? It is magical.

Picture yourself a small-town boy who has never read a book in his entire life. Everything he knows, he saw it on TV, heard it from his relatives, friends…

This means that he will never go beyond the information given. He will not be able to improve his critical sense and he will be more naïve to what people say. I think there are too much conflicts due to the lack of reading. We do not understand each other because we do not know each other. Reading is primordial. For the sake of human beings, do read. It is not important if you start at 87 years old, read for yourself and for coexsitence. 170
